Significance:

World Meteorological Day 2023 takes place during WMO’s 150th anniversary. It highlights past achievements, present progress and future potential – from the late 19th century telegraphs and shipping forecasts to supercomputers and space technology.

The main aim to observe the day is to raise awareness about the work and achievements of the organization.

The anniversary also serves as a reminder of our changing climate. The International Meteorological Organization – the predecessor of the World Meteorological Organization – was established in 1873 in an era when pollution from industrial and human activities was at its beginning. It also seeks to highlight the importance of meteorological and hydrological services for the overall safety of the global society.
